Small Business Saturday in Milwaukee

At Vertz Marketing, a large portion of our clients are small businesses. They hold a special place in our heart and we always work to stress the important role small businesses play in the success of our local economies.

We’re all familiar with Black Friday, the biggest shopping day of the year. That’s what big box stores offer some of their deepest discounts of the year to boost sales just before the holidays. Many people consider it the official start of the holiday shopping season.

In 2010, as a counterpart to Black Friday and Cyber Monday, Small Business Saturday was born. This yearly event, which takes place on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, encourages holiday shoppers to visit and patronize the small, local brick-and-mortar stores in their communities.

Thanks to American Express, the founding sponsor, Small Business Saturday has grown exponentially, gaining exposure throughout the United States and the United Kingdom. Last year, roughly 70% of Americans were aware of Small Business Saturday. What’s even more impressive is that of those who knew about it, about half of them acted on it. That incredible push resulted in an estimated $5.7 billion in revenue at local merchants across the US. Incredible!

Some may consider big-box stores and e-commerce sites to be more “convenient,” but nothing beats the personalized shopping experience you’ll find at a local small business. These types of establishments are vital to the growth and success of local economies. Did you know small businesses create, on average, two out of every three new jobs in cities across the country?
