The joy of social media for small businesses in Milwaukee is it’s a fairly low-cost strategy. Plus, for the most part, it’s simple to manage. It’s important to do some research before getting started though, because there are a number of mistakes you can make. To help you avoid them, we’ll be doing a two part series highlighting some of the most common ones. Let’s get started.
Mistake: Not interacting with followers
Too often, companies make the mistake of not utilizing their ability to interact with their followers (who are, by the way, essentially customers). Platforms like Facebook give you the perfect opportunity to draft quick, thoughtful responses to comments – especially in the case of negative ones. If you get in the habit of not responding, your followers will notice and you’ll develop a reputation of pure self-promotion which is not a good thing for social media.
Mistake: Not considering the audience
There are many reasons people “like” or “follow” companies on social media, so switching up your content is essential. Too much self-promotion can be off-putting, so it’s good to consider posting other useful information like articles as well as sharing relevant posts from followers or other companies.
Mistake: Taking on too much
One of the biggest mistakes you can make is taking on the task of social media management without having the necessary time to do so. To make your channels successful, it takes quite a bit of time and effort. If you don’t have the means to hire someone to take care of it, try getting started with one platform at a time. First, get a Facebook page up and running, then maybe a Twitter or LinkedIn, and so on.
